Over the past twenty-five years, the Moravian Philharmonic has had many excellent chief conductors who have determined the artistic direction of this respected Olomouc institution. Stanislav Macura, Jiří Mikula, the first foreign chief conductor Jin Wang, František Preisler Jr. and the present chief conductor Petr Vronský have brought us interesting performances of considerable merit, which especially after November 1989 have aroused great public interest. In Olomouc several outstanding local and international artists have appeared, performing, since 2001 in the newly renovated Reduta concert hall, the reconstruction of which has won Olomouc a first-class...

Wagner's adopted motifs, conceived in an interval-modal way, or quotations, may be seen as a fully modern stylistic feature because it is repeatedly found in the work of contemporary composers, such as Debussy, Stravinskij and Bartók. With the Bayreuth master we often feel as if pure inspiration was almost secondary because it seems to be subordinated to particular intervallic material. Similarly, Wagner's increasing propensity for quoting himself, especially in works such as Die Meistersinger and Parsifal, can be understood as a pioneering act in relation to many modern composers, e. g. Gustav Mahler and Alban Berg, whose complex work formed an artistic...

The Uničov organ builders, Brauner brothers enjoyed a unique position among organ makers active in late 19th century and early 20th century Moravia. Their uniqueness was mainly due to the strong instrument-specific nature of the company's production. The company prided itself on being a modern enterprise which, though employing only a few workers, used the highest quality equipment and advanced production technology. In their time, the Brauner Brothers excelled in technical refinements, and many of their inventions were patented. These patents are registered in Prague and Vienna. Companies with innovative design are far more extensive than those...

If we survey the history of theatre life in 19th-century Olomouc, there is only a small number of directors who were able to lead their institution in a better way than was the case in other provincial scenes in the Austrian (Austro-Hungarian) monarchy. One of the most successful theatre entrepreneur in Olomouc was Friedrich Blum, who introduced into the repertoire new famous operas such as Verdi's Rigoletto or one of the most challenging performance of the age, Meyerbeer's Le Prophète. Among those compositions which were performed remarkably often, we encounter Balfe's The Bohemian Girl. Blum obviously had a very good sense for successful works,...

This study reveals the structure of the economic and artistic life of the German municipal theatre in Olomouc. Between the city as the owner of the theater and its tenants, the theatre directors, a relationship existed with clearly defined powers and duties. This was defined primarily in contracts made with emerging theatre directors. The concern of this study is the period from the 1870's until 1920, when the former German theatre passed into Czech hands. In the later history of the German municipal theatre in Olomouc, there was a significant strengthening of the role of the city, especially since the director was no longer required to pay rent for...

Vilem Steinman (1880-1962) was an important Czech choirmaster and teacher who emerged from the artistic tradition of Ferdinand Vach (1860-1939) which he further developed. He secured his first professional post after studying at the Kroměříž Teachers' Institute in Prostějov, where he taught at an elementary school for boys. From 1906, he served as choirmaster of the Orlice Male Voice Choir, (after Ezechiel Ambros), which under his leadership approached Vach's Moravian Teachers Choir in terms of performance quality. From 1911 he became conductor of Prostejov's amateur orchestra - The Orchestral Association and in 1913, choirmaster of a women's choir...

The city of Olomouc has always enjoyed significant ecclesiastical powers. As a result of this, there has been a renewed focus on liturgical music. After 1945, there were three historical milestones in the general development of church music. The first was the year 1948, which saw the beginning of a new persecution of the Roman Catholic Church. The second milestone relates to the putting into practise of the principles approved by the Second Vatican Council, which resulted in a strengthening of the active participation by the faithful in the liturgy in which an indispensable role was played by church choirs. The third milestone was in 1989 when church...
