Musicologica Olomucensia vol. 17, (2013):9-29 | DOI: 10.5507/mo.2013.001
This study pays attention to what is the relationship of young people in the age between 12 and 29 years to music and how this relation changes in dependence on which school they study, or whether they already work, or whether they are unemployed. The research data have confirmed that music constitutes a very important phenomenon for young people; however, it is true that the end of study and the beginning of employment modify that relation. While the students - according to their own words - cannot rather imagine their life without music and they emphasize music fascinates them, the workers' relationship to music is quite less intensive and they perceive...

Musicologica Olomucensia vol. 17, (2013):31-37 | DOI: 10.5507/mo.2013.002
The essay focuses on the reception history of jazz music in the Czech Lands. It is based on contrasting two rather distant historical moments. Firstly, the situation of 1920's comes under scrutiny. Jazz arrived to the Central Europe after the World War I as a new form of popular music. Simultaneously, numerous avant-garde composers saw it as one of possible catalysts of departure from traditional post-romantic musical idiom. In Central Europe, some advocates of jazz declared a need for classical music to receive a "transfusion of fresh blood" from jazz to re-establish any links to the modern social world. Among the Czech musicians, Erwin Schulhoff...

Even though the Communist Party bodies in charge of governmental cultural policy in the period of so-called normalization restricted and liquidated rock music systematically, rock music life did not fully cease to exist. This in substantiated by the history of the WSS music band (Water-Supply Spectres) from Olomouc which succeeded in surviving for nearly nine years in the 1970s, the most critical period of the repressions enforced. The music band was established in December 1970. It broke up based on an intervention by State Security at the promoter of the band, which was the Socialist Youth Organization, basic unit 27, at the beginning of the year...

Musicologica Olomucensia vol. 17, (2013):99-124 | DOI: 10.5507/mo.2013.007
Shortly after the Czech professional theatre in Olomouc was founded, a group of young dancers led by a so-called principal dancer was established in 1920, in addition to the opera and the operetta ensembles. At that time, the group did not constitute an independent ensemble - that came into being only after the World War II. In the beginning, the ballet took part in preparations of opera and operetta performances; only in some seasons, a pure ballet performance was staged. In 1945, the ballet company became independent. It was gradually changed into a fully professional body. Soloists with good technical and artistic qualification came to Olomouc;...

Viktor Velek
Musicologica Olomucensia vol. 17, (2013):125-137 | DOI: 10.5507/mo.2013.008
The main aim of this paper is to provide an overview of the development of research into the musical tradition of St. Wenceslas, showing both the objects of researchers' interest at different times, as well as the hypotheses presented. The term "musical tradition of St. Wenceslas" almost always refers to the medieval hymn Saint Wenceslas (the St. Wenceslas Chorale). Undoubtedly, this example of Czech language culture represents the best-known and most important work of the musical tradition, but such a generalization and restriction ignores hundreds of other compositions that have been created over the course of a thousand years, as well as current...
