The Brauner Brothers organ builders in Uničov - their characteristics and importance

The Uničov organ builders, Brauner brothers enjoyed a unique position among organ makers active in late 19th century and early 20th century Moravia. Their uniqueness was mainly due to the strong instrument-specific nature of the company's production. The company prided itself on being a modern enterprise which, though employing only a few workers, used the highest quality equipment and advanced production technology.
In their time, the Brauner Brothers excelled in technical refinements, and many of their inventions were patented. These patents are registered in Prague and Vienna. Companies with innovative design are far more extensive than those introducing technical innovations such as those of Brauner. Compared with other organ building firms (Gebrüder Rieger, Karel Neusser, Franz Kolb) Brauner experimented much more extensively with the moving parts of the instrument. With of the passage of time this complexity of individual parts of the organ, also led however, to a greater failure rate of Brauner Brothers instruments. At that time, the company built quality instruments designed with a distinctive selection of registers. Among the unique legacy of their activities are the organs in Úsov and the synagogue in Pilsen. A significant example of Brauner Bros. organ reconstruction is the celebrated instrument by F. Buckow in Vienna's Church of Maria Treu.
