He worked as a lecturer at the Faculty of Education of Charles University, later at the Department of Music Theory and History in the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, as a researcher at the Institute of Musicology of the Czechoslovak Academy of Science (1962-1985), and as an associated professor at the Department of Musicology of Palacký University in Olomouc (since 1991). His monograph Hudba antických kultur [Music of Ancient Cultures] (Olomouc, 1995; 2nd enlarged edition, Prague, 2006) is a book of international significance.
