AB The author registers the assessment of the opera The Makropulos Case by Leoš Janáček since its foreign premiere up to the present day, as it is reflected in German and English reviews. From their study the specific features of German and Anglo-Saxon reception of Janáček are established. The criticism shows that German audiences have always been somewhat reserved toward Janáček, and to this day it is a problem to keep The Makropulos Case on the repertoire of German opera houses. On the other hand, English reviews are more positive, in Great Britain and particularly in the USA this opera is accepted as an interesting, very attractive work of the 20th century. The special theme and its rendering by Janáček may make it difficult both for those who stage it as well as for the audiences, but no one has doubts about its quality and its force on the stage.
