THE LEGEND OF THE PIED PIPER IN CZECH CULTURE
A myth of the Pied Piper is among those central topics of European culture which, over time, lose their connection with their original model and become symbols for a specific situation, quality, or character.
This study focusses on this "topos" in the context of Czech culture from the earliest days to the present time, we explore the various treatments of the legend in different art forms (literature, drama, music, the plastic arts), and also its connection with historical events.
The following genres are represented in the work of Czech composers: song, opera, ballet, symphony, programme music, comedy and marionette film for adults. The ballet The Pied Piper by Pavel Bořkovec and the marionette film by Libor Bárta with music by Michael Kocáb are among the remarkable adaptations of this theme.
